In a significant stride toward accelerating innovation in next‑generation mobility, Mercedes‑Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) have entered into a five‑year Master Research Agreement (MRA) to jointly advance research in emerging technologies crucial to the future of engineering and transportation.

A Strategic Five‑Year Partnership

The MRA formalizes a long‑term, structured research engagement between one of the world’s leading automotive R&D centres and one of India’s premier engineering institutes. The collaboration is designed to create shared pathways for knowledge development, combining academic depth with real‑world engineering requirements.

According to MBRDI, this alliance marks a pivotal step in bringing academia and industry closer to solving complex mobility challenges—a continuation of Mercedes‑Benz’s legacy of engineering excellence, which spans 140 years since the invention of the automobile and 30 years of MBRDI’s operations in India.

Focus Areas of the Collaboration

The partnership will concentrate on four frontier technology domains, each representing critical challenges and opportunities for the mobility industry:

1. Quantum Technologies

The research will explore quantum sensors, computation, and materials to enable ultra‑precise sensing and control systems in future vehicles.

2. Future Materials

Joint efforts will develop next‑generation materials that can improve vehicle efficiency, reduce weight, enhance durability, and support sustainable mobility.

3. Neuromorphic Engineering

Inspired by biological neural systems, neuromorphic computing holds the potential for energy‑efficient and high‑performance vehicle intelligence—essential for autonomous systems.

4. Electric Mobility

To support India’s transition to electrified transportation, research will target advancements in battery systems, energy management, and e‑mobility infrastructure.

First Research Project: Quantum Sensors & Battery Systems

As part of the initial phase of the collaboration, a major research initiative has already been launched in quantum sensors and battery systems. The project is jointly led by:

  • Prof. Nirat Ray, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, IIT Delhi
  • Prof. Saurabh Saxena, Centre for Applied Research and Technology, IIT Delhi

This project brings together interdisciplinary researchers from IIT Delhi and engineering teams from MBRDI to develop prototypes and perform real‑world validation with the aim of creating scalable, high‑impact technology solutions.
