Question 1

What is Honda's wireless power transfer (WPT) road system?

Accepted Answer

It is a magnetic coupling wireless power transfer road system developed by Honda R&D with Taisei Corporation and Taisei Rotec Corporation. It is designed to charge EVs while they are in motion.

Question 2

Who are Honda's partners in this project?

Accepted Answer

Taisei Corporation develops the DC power supply system, and Taisei Rotec Corporation develops the construction methods for WPT roads. Honda R&D develops the road-embedded GA system and the vehicle-side VA unit.

Question 3

When will Honda's wireless charging road be tested on public roads?

Accepted Answer

Demonstration testing on public roads is planned from the Japanese 2027 fiscal year, which begins on April 1, 2027. The companies will also take part in NEXCO East's Tateyama Project in Chiba.

Question 4

What power level is Honda aiming for?

Accepted Answer

Honda plans to verify performance at high power output of up to 150 kW for potential application to large commercial vehicles.

Question 5

What is new about Honda's design?

Accepted Answer

Honda says it integrates the inverter and coil into a single road-embedded DWPT unit for the first time in the world, and that the system distributes power by DC. The "first" claim is based on Honda's own research as of the end of September 2026.

Question 6

Can the system handle heavy trucks?

Accepted Answer

Honda designed the GA units and pavement for vehicles of about 20 tons gross weight. A durability test equivalent to 1 million wheel loads at 49 kN per wheel is planned.

Question 7

Can I use Honda's wireless road charging today?

Accepted Answer

No. The technology is in development and testing, with public-road trials planned from FY2027.
