Infographic showing the MG U9 dual-cab ute line-up in Australia, featuring the green MG U9 EV next to the white MG U9 Diesel, highlighting specs like 3,500 kg towing capacity, 102.2 kWh battery, and 430 km WLTP range.
MG U9 ute range for Australia pairs a 2.5L Turbo Diesel (160 kW / 520 Nm) starting from $52,990 drive-away alongside a 325 kW Dual-Motor EV variant featuring a 102.2 kWh battery, 430 km WLTP range, and 3,500 kg braked towing capacity.

The MG U9 diesel is on sale in Australia in four variants, from $52,990 drive-away, with a shared 3,500kg braked towing rating, a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine, ZF eight-speed automatic and selectable 4×4 with low range. MG has also now revealed full specifications for an electric U9 EV.

The diesel U9 uses coil-sprung, independent multi-link rear suspension rather than the leaf-sprung live axle common on rivals like the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux and MG’s own SAIC stablemate, the LDV Terron 9 — a design difference, not an automatic advantage.

GCM6,500kg
Payload770–870kg

Dimensions and Cargo

Length 5,500mm, wheelbase 3,300mm, height 1,874mm, width (excl. mirrors) 1,997mm, ground clearance 220mm, turning circle 13.3m, wading depth 550mm, tub floor 1,600mm, tub width 1,230mm. Load area is ~1,200L, extending to ~1,600L with the optional Smart Hatch (Explore Pro only).

Interior, Tech and Off-Road

Standard kit includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen, digital cluster, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, AEB, adaptive cruise, lane-keep assist and blind-spot monitoring; wireless charging and 360° camera arrive from Explore X. A supplied review’s off-road test found less articulation than a live-axle rival and traction control challenged in low grip — the diff locks helped. These are test observations, not factory claims.

MG confirms dual 12.3-inch screens, leather seats, JBL audio and a heated/ventilated/massage driver’s seat. It shares its platform with the diesel U9 and LDV’s eTerron 9, becoming Australia’s third fully electric ute alongside the KGM Musso EV and Toyota HiLux BEV — out-towing both.

Warranty

MG U9 light-commercial vehicles for personal use get a 5-year/unlimited-km warranty, extendable to 7 years/200,000km only with exclusive dealer servicing on schedule. Commercial buyers get 5 years/160,000km, with no 7-year extension.

Key Takeaway

The diesel MG U9 enters at $52,990 drive-away with strong equipment but a 770–870kg payload trailing some work-focused rivals. Its fully specified EV sibling confirms 3,500kg towing, 430km WLTP range and 115kW DC charging, ahead of rival electric utes on towing, though Australian pricing and on-sale timing are still to come.
