India’s electric two-wheeler market recorded 1,83,204 retail units in August 2026, up 67.05% YoY from 1,09,673 units in August 2025, according to FADA’s official retail data. Penetration reached 10.68% of India’s total two-wheeler market, up from 7.66% a year ago. Volumes fell 10.35% MoM from July’s 2,04,362 units.
That combination — exceptional YoY growth, penetration above 10%, and a sharp sequential decline — sets up the real question: is India’s electric two-wheeler market entering a genuine mass-market phase, or is August’s headline growth partly inflated by a soft, GST-2.0-affected August 2025 base? The data supports elements of both stories.
| Metric | August 2026 |
| Electric 2W retail sales | 1,83,204 |
| YoY growth | +67.05% |
| MoM change | -10.35% |
| EV 2W penetration | 10.68% |
| July 2026 penetration | 11.24% |
| August 2025 penetration | 7.66% |
| Market leader | TVS Motor — 48,938 |
Electric Two-Wheeler Sales Hit 1.83 Lakh Units In August 2026
FADA’s electric two-wheeler OEM table, collated on 4 September 2026 from 1,467 of 1,469 RTOs, reports:
- August 2026: 1,83,204 units
- July 2026: 2,04,362 units
- August 2025: 1,09,673 units
- YoY: +67.05%
- MoM: -10.35%
Electric two-wheelers were the largest EV category by absolute volume in August 2026. Against FADA’s total EV retail figure of 2,98,448 units across all vehicle categories, electric two-wheelers made up approximately 61.4% of India’s total EV market — a calculation based on FADA’s two datasets, not a figure FADA states directly.
EV Penetration Crossed 10% But Cooled From July’s Peak

Penetration moved from 7.66% (Aug’25) to 11.24% (Jul’26) to 10.68% (Aug’26) — a YoY gain of +302 basis points, but a MoM decline of -56 basis points. FADA highlighted August as the first time 2W EV share crossed 10% in a non-festive month. The MoM dip shows that climb isn’t perfectly linear month to month.

TVS Motor Led India’s Electric Two-Wheeler Market In August 2026
The FADA OEM table shows established manufacturers, not startups, at the top of the electric two-wheeler segment:
India’s Electric Two-Wheeler OEM Sales — August 2026

| TVS Motor | 48,938 | 55,499 | 25,646 | -11.82% | +90.82% |
| Bajaj Auto | 41,114 | 45,613 | 12,246 | -9.86% | +235.73% |
| Ather Energy | 28,757 | 30,357 | 19,210 | -5.27% | +49.70% |
| Hero MotoCorp | 19,007 | 22,900 | 13,769 | -17.00% | +38.04% |
| Ola Electric | 13,852 | 14,106 | 19,464 | -1.80% | -28.83% |

TVS Motor led FADA’s electric two-wheeler OEM table with 48,938 units, followed by Bajaj Auto at 41,114 and Ather Energy at 28,757. TVS remained the segment leader despite an 11.82% sequential decline. This is TVS’s electric two-wheeler leadership specifically — separate from its position in India’s overall two-wheeler market, where Honda and Hero rank ahead of it on total volume.

Bajaj Auto’s 235.73% Growth Is The Standout Story
Bajaj’s electric two-wheeler retail jumped from 12,246 units in August 2025 to 41,114 in August 2026 — a 235.73% YoY increase, the fastest growth among the top five OEMs, and Bajaj was the second-largest individually reported electric 2W OEM. The scale of this increase shows how quickly established manufacturers are expanding their presence in India’s electric two-wheeler market. This is an OEM-specific growth rate from a comparatively low base and should not be read as a signal for the segment’s future growth rate.
Ather Grew Steadily; Ola Electric Declined Sharply
Ather Energy remained the third-largest individually reported electric two-wheeler OEM in August, growing 49.70% YoY to 28,757 units — solid, though slower than TVS or Bajaj. Ola Electric moved the opposite direction: retail fell 28.83% YoY to 13,852 units, continuing a decline from 19,464 units a year earlier. India’s electric two-wheeler market is expanding rapidly, but growth is increasingly uneven across manufacturers.
Smaller players grew fast from low bases: Greaves Electric Mobility rose 88.59% to 8,613 units, River Mobility grew 170.15% to 5,141 units, and BGauss Auto grew 180.22% to 4,845 units.
Established OEMs, Not Startups, Now Anchor The Segment
TVS, Bajaj and Hero together sold 1,09,059 electric two-wheelers in August 2026, accounting for approximately 59.5% of the reported electric 2W market — a calculation based on FADA’s OEM table, not a figure FADA states directly. This suggests electric two-wheeler adoption is broadening beyond startup-led demand, although it does not, on its own, prove that the market has permanently entered a mass-market phase.
Is This Growth Real, Or Just A Weak 2025 Base?
FADA has cautioned that August 2025 was a soft comparison base, as buyers deferred two-wheeler purchases ahead of the GST 2.0 rate cut. That base effect is real and should temper how the 67.05% headline is read. But the result cannot be dismissed as base effect alone: EV two-wheeler penetration gained 3.02 percentage points YoY, and EV 2W growth of 67.05% substantially exceeded the overall 2W market’s 19.69% YoY rise. The 67.05% growth rate itself should not be extrapolated into coming months, given how it was set.
Rural India’s Role Isn’t Directly Measurable For EVs Yet
FADA reports rural two-wheeler retail (all fuel types combined) grew 20.25% YoY against urban’s 19.07%. This covers the entire two-wheeler market, not electric two-wheelers specifically — FADA does not publish a rural/urban split for EVs, so rural EV demand cannot be confirmed from this dataset.
India’s Electric Two-Wheeler Market Is Becoming More Mainstream — But The Trend Still Needs Testing
Taken together, the data points to a broadening electric two-wheeler market rather than a startup-only phenomenon: penetration above 10%, 1.83 lakh units in absolute EV 2W volume, and TVS, Bajaj and Hero collectively holding a calculated 59.5% share. Against that, overall EV 2W volume fell 10.35% MoM and Ola Electric declined 28.83% YoY, while the comparison base remains skewed by GST 2.0. A wider, whole-industry FADA dealer survey shows 81.62% expecting growth for the September-November period — not an EV-specific forecast, but still a useful signal for the festive quarter ahead. That period, especially the festive season, will determine how durable August’s momentum is. The key number to watch: can electric two-wheeler penetration hold above 10% through Diwali, or does it retreat further from July’s 11.24% peak?
5 Key Takeaways
1. Electric two-wheeler retail reached 1,83,204 units in August 2026, up 67.05% YoY.
2. EV penetration rose to 10.68% from 7.66% a year earlier, but slipped from July’s 11.24%.
3. TVS Motor led the electric 2W market with 48,938 units, followed by Bajaj Auto at 41,114 and Ather at 28,757.
4. Bajaj’s electric 2W retail surged 235.73% YoY, while Ola Electric declined 28.83%.
5. The market’s broadening across established OEMs is encouraging, but September-November will show whether August’s momentum is durable.
