Quick answer: The Smart #2 is an all-electric, rear-wheel-drive two-seater that premiered at the Paris Motor Show on 12 October 2026. It is 2,746 mm long, uses a 35.8 kWh LFP battery with a 290 km WLTP range target, fast-charges from 10 to 80% in about 20 minutes, and starts at €19,999 in Europe. Sales begin in 2027.
What Is the Smart #2?
The Smart #2 revives the brand’s original idea: a tiny, manoeuvrable car built for city life. Smart’s premiere release recalls that its first two-seater was shown as an art object beneath the Louvre Pyramid 30 years ago. The production #2 has now returned to Paris.
The Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team styled the car around a philosophy of “Love, Pure, Unexpected.” It keeps the wheels-at-the-corners stance, short overhangs and a reinterpreted floating roof, while logo-inspired lighting adds a modern signature. The original Fortwo ended production in spring 2024, so the #2 closes a gap of roughly two and a half years. With this the Smart is going back to its roots.”
Smart Brand and Parent Companies: Mercedes-Benz and Geely
Smart is a 50:50 joint venture between Germany’s Mercedes-Benz and China’s Geely. Since Geely joined around five years ago, the lineup has grown to larger five-seat models: the #1, #3 and #5. The #2 is now the smallest Smart on sale.
The premiere release is datelined Hangzhou, China, and quotes Global CEO Tong Xiangbei and Global CMO Kang Yi. That mix of German design and Chinese engineering defines the car.

How Small Is the Smart #2? Dimensions and Turning Circle

At 2,746 mm, the #2 is far shorter than other city EVs. Where the Fiat 500e is 3.6 m and the new Renault Twingo is 3.8 m, the Smart #2 is about 254 mm longer than the original Smart.
The 6.95 m turning circle suits tight streets, and Smart says the car lets you “almost turn on the spot”.
Battery, Motor and Range: What the Numbers Mean
The #2 rides on the new Electric Compact Architecture, built for ultra-compact two-seaters. It pairs a floor-mounted high-voltage battery with rear-wheel drive and a five-link rear suspension, which Smart calls a first in its class. Wider rear tyres add grip.
The 35.8 kWh LFP pack is small by design. A lighter, shorter car needs less energy per kilometre, and Smart UK quotes 13.4 to 13.6 kWh/100 km. The smart #2 has 290 km WLTP combined range.
Charging Speed and Vehicle-to-Load Capability
DC charging peaks at 65 kW and takes the battery from 10 to 80% in about 20 minutes. Vice President Dr Tilo Schweers told electrive that Smart does not want to speed up charging at the expense of battery life.
On AC, the 11 kW charger on Premium and above needs about three hours for 10–80% on a three-phase supply, according to Smart UK. The entry-level Pure uses a 7.4 kW single-phase charger and needs about five hours.
Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) is standard. It lets the traction battery power laptops, e-bikes and other devices.
Tridion Cell Evo Safety and Driver Assistance
Safety anchors the pitch. The fourth-generation Tridion Cell Evo uses a three-layer steel construction and a Full Cage Frame. Smart UK cites over 78% high-strength steel and more than four tonnes of roof crush and rollover protection. The cell is now hidden rather than displayed as a styling feature.
Driver assistance includes Smart Pilot Assist and adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go and Highway Assist. Higher trims add blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Smart notes that these systems are aids and do not relieve the driver of responsibility.
Design and Interior: S-Curve Cockpit, Split Tailgate and Sennheiser Sound
An S-shaped cockpit houses a 10.1-inch touchscreen and an 8.8-inch driver display. The two seats are individual but visually joined, which Smart says keeps driver and passenger connected. The interior quality and the turbine-style air vents look impressive.
Premium-line equipment listed by Smart UK includes a seven-speaker Sennheiser system, wireless charging, heated front seats and steering wheel, Ambient lighting+ with 256 colours and a Panoramic Halo Roof. The Smart Pillar lets owners clip on accessories.
The Split Tailgate has glass that opens separately. The lower section folds down as a loading platform or a seat rated for 120 kg. Luggage space is 305 litres, rising to 527 litres at maximum.
Trim Lines and Couture Edition: Pure, Pure+, Premium
Europe gets Pure, Pure+ and Premium, plus a limited Couture Edition. China gets Premium and Couture Edition only.
Even the Pure has adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go, Highway Assist, LED lighting and V2L. Premium adds the 11 kW AC charger, heated faux-leather seats, a glass roof and the Sennheiser audio system.
The Couture Edition pairs Atelier White Matte paint with a Platinum Gold roof, gold detailing, 16-inch Lyra rims and a numbered interior badge. The release limits it to 999 units in Europe and 999 in China. It comes with 19-inch wheels. A BRABUS variant has also been announced.
Smart #2 Price and Launch Timeline
The European starting price of €19,999 and a 2027 market launch and the UK price is also under £20,000. Smart UK is registering interest, and early ordering begins in Europe and China with local pricing to follow.
The car will be built in China and exported. Dr Schweers said European-only production would have delayed the launch by one to two years, though European production is not ruled out if demand is high.
Smart #2 vs Rivals: Why the Price Matters
At pricing level the BYD Dolphin Surf and Citroën eC3, both priced under £20,000 and both four-seaters, and the Renault Twingo also falls under the same category. The Smart’s usual price premium may be justified by build quality and character. The trade-off is clear: fewer seats, a smaller boot and a more distinctive car.

Verdict: A Small Car With a Big Statement
The Smart #2 asks how much car a city driver really needs. With a 290 km WLTP target, 20-minute fast charging, a 6.95 m turning circle and a sub-€20,000 European price, it is a credible city EV. In our believe, it “won’t be for everybody,” and that is exactly why it stands out.
