It claims 29 kmpl, makes 160 PS of combined power and offers more boot space than the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Hybrid and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Hybrid. Quick Verdict: Is the Renault Duster Strong Hybrid Worth Buying?

On paper, yes. The Duster Hybrid leads its two rivals on combined power, claimed efficiency, boot space, fuel tank size and ground clearance, and its top variant is the cheapest of the three top-spec hybrids. The Grand Vitara Hybrid still wins on the lowest entry price and the widest variant choice, while the Hyryder Hybrid is the priciest at both ends of its range. Renault’s smaller service network is the main question mark.

The Duster’s big engine and combined output give it a clear power advantage. The rivals’ electric motors make more power (79 bhp against about 49 bhp), but the Duster’s motor makes more torque at 208 Nm. Renault also claims 0-100 km/h in 9.61 seconds and up to 29% fuel savings compared with diesel.

How the Duster Strong Hybrid Works: Six Automatic Driving Modes

The system combines the petrol engine, a traction motor, a starter generator and the 1.4 kWh battery. It chooses between all-electric, petrol-only, series-parallel, series, regenerative braking and charging-via-engine modes without driver input. Renault says up to 80% of city driving can be done in EV mode, based on in-house tests that vary with road, driving style and weather. The Duster is a self-charging hybrid, not an EV.

Renault Duster Strong Hybrid Driving Experience: First-Drive Impressions

These impressions come from an early first drive of roughly 150+ km, not a long-term test, so ownership reports will give a fuller picture.

Duster Hybrid EV Mode in City Traffic

Pressing the start button produces no cranking sound. The Duster starts silently in electric mode, creeps forward at about 8 km/h without throttle and responds instantly to the accelerator thanks to motor torque. In heavy traffic, you can drive with minimal throttle. One driver held EV mode up to 51 km/h, while others reportedly passed 80 km/h.

Duster Hybrid Performance on the Open Road

The petrol engine joins in when you need more power or the battery runs low. The handover is smooth, though you can hear the engine come on. Power delivery is linear, overtaking is easy, and the SUV holds triple-digit speeds without strain.

Eco Mode, E-Save and B Mode on the Duster Hybrid

  • Eco mode: A switch dulls throttle response, limits acceleration, changes shift points and reduces power to systems such as the air conditioning. It suits city driving.
  • E-Save: The system leans on the petrol engine and recharges the battery to maintain a reserve for later use.
  • B mode: Raises regenerative braking when you lift off the accelerator.

Duster Hybrid Gearbox Behaviour

The multi-mode automatic is smooth with a light foot in the city. Under hard acceleration, kickdown isn’t the quickest, and the gearbox can hold gears longer than expected while the engine revs loudly. There are no paddle shifters.

Duster Hybrid Cabin Noise and Refinement

Insulation is strong and no vibrations are felt when the engine starts. You may hear the generator topping up the battery. Wind and road noise begin to creep in around 100 km/h but are not a bother at 120 km/h.

Duster Hybrid Real-World Mileage vs the 29 kmpl Claim

Renault’s 29 kmpl is certified under Rule 115(G) of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989 and its range claim is 1,400+ km on a 50-litre tank. The drive returned about 15 kmpl over roughly 150+ km, but that run included fast driving, hard acceleration, braking and a lot of idling. Treat 15 kmpl as a hard-driving figure and definitely in normal driving one can bring out 22 to 24 kmpl.

Duster Hybrid Ride, Handling, Steering and Brakes

  • Ride: MacPherson struts at the front, a coil-spring twist beam at the rear and frequency-dependent damping at both ends. Bumps and potholes are well absorbed at low speed and flattened at higher speeds.
  • Handling: Stable at high speed and more planted than the turbo-petrol Duster. Body roll is present but controlled. The 225/55 R18 tyres offer adequate grip.
  • Steering: Light in the city and direct at speed, though a little more weight would help.
  • Brakes: Discs at all four wheels, responsive and well calibrated.

Which Strong Hybrid SUV Should You Buy? A Quick Decision Guide

  • Choose the Renault Duster Hybrid if you want the most power, boot space and equipment for the money at the top of the range.
  • Choose the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Hybrid if you want the lowest entry price, five variants to pick from and the wider Maruti Suzuki service network.
  • Choose the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Hybrid if you value Toyota’s service reach and a 360-degree camera on selected variants, and can accept the highest prices of the three.

Duster Hybrid Ownership: Warranty and Protect 360

Renault offers up to 7 years or 150,000 km of warranty under its Renault Forever program, and 8 years or 160,000 km on the battery, whichever occurs earlier. Forever Protect 360 adds 3 years of comprehensive motor insurance, 3 years of scheduled maintenance coverage and a 60% assured resale value, with terms and conditions applying.
