Quick Takeaway: Nissan has confirmed the all-new Navara Pro Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) for Australia in 2027. It pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor for a preliminary 300kW and 800Nm, plus up to 1,000kg payload and 3,500kg braked towing. Battery size, EV-only range and pricing are still to be announced.
Nissan Navara Pro PHEV Is Nissan’s First Plug-In Hybrid for Australia
Australia’s ute market is about to get a new kind of Navara. Nissan will add the all-new Navara Pro PHEV to its local line-up in 2027, making it the brand’s first plug-in hybrid in Australia and its first electrified ute globally.
Australia and New Zealand will also be the first right-hand-drive markets in the world to receive it. Nissan calls it the sixth generation of the Navara nameplate, following five generations sold locally. For EV-curious ute buyers, the plug-in route promises electrification without giving up the capability the segment demands.
300kW and 800Nm: How the 2.0-Litre Turbo Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain Works
The Oceania-specification Navara Pro PHEV combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a high-output electric motor integrated into an 8-speed automatic transmission. Nissan quotes a preliminary 300kW of combined power and 800Nm of combined torque, both subject to homologation.
The gearbox also provides low-range crawling for demanding off-road conditions and low-rpm cruising at highway speeds, which Nissan says supports relaxed, efficient long-distance driving.
Why Nissan Chose the 2.0-Litre Over the 1.5-Litre PHEV for Oceania
Nissan evaluated two plug-in hybrid drivetrains in Australia: the globally announced 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol PHEV and a new 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol PHEV. After assessing both against local expectations for towing, payload and sustained performance, it selected the 2.0-litre.
Navara Pro PHEV Towing and Payload: 3,500kg Braked and Up to 1,000kg
Two numbers will matter most to tradies and caravan owners. Nissan says the Navara Pro PHEV offers approximately 1,000kg of payload and a 3,500kg braked towing capacity, both subject to final homologation.
The towing figure is a maximum and is based on a Genuine Nissan towbar. Actual capacity depends on laden mass, driving conditions, accessories and the maximum towball download. Payload is GVM minus kerb mass and excludes passengers, cargo and accessories.
Vehicle-to-Load (V2L): Using a Plug-In Hybrid Ute as a Mobile Power Source
One of the clearest EV-style benefits is Vehicle-to-Load (V2L). Nissan says available V2L capability provides electrical power on the go, positioned for work, touring, camping and recreational use.
Mechanical 4×4, Diff Lock, Four Drive Modes and Seven Terrain Modes
Nissan stresses that this is a 4×4 workhorse first, not simply a ute with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It uses a mechanical 4×4 system and mechanical differential-lock capability, and Nissan tested front, rear and combined diff-lock configurations during local development.
Drivers can choose from four drive modes (ECO, Standard, Sport and Slippery) and seven terrain modes (Standard, Deep Snow, Mud, Sand, Rock, Wading and Expert). Each mode adjusts powertrain, steering and traction-control mapping.
How Nissan Tested the Navara Pro PHEV on Australian Roads and Tracks

The first prototypes arrived in Australia in 2025. Five development vehicles have since travelled more than 20,000 kilometres in Australian conditions, with testing continuing.
Teams from Nissan Australia, Nissan Motor Limited in Japan and Zhengzhou Nissan Automobile in China collaborated, feeding insights to Nissan’s light commercial vehicle development centre in Zhengzhou City. The program refined powertrains, suspension, ADAS calibration, terrain modes, tyres, diff-lock setups, towing and load performance. Rear suspension is still open: both leaf-spring and multi-link coil-spring layouts were assessed, with the final choice to be confirmed closer to sales.
Three LED Slots: How the Navara PHEV Design Honours the 1980s D21 Hardbody
The styling nods to the three-slot bonnet opening of the 1980s D21 Hardbody pickup. Nissan reinterprets it as a trio of horizontal LED elements above the grille, a lighting signature it says signals the ute’s electrified, forward-looking identity.
Navara Pro PHEV Interior: Five-Seat Dual-Cab With Sunroof and Ventilated Seats
The Navara Pro PHEV is a five-seat dual-cab. Depending on grade, features can include a large central touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof, and heated and ventilated front seats. Final Australian equipment will be confirmed before launch.
Nissan MORE 10-Year, 300,000km Warranty for Navara PHEV Buyers
The Navara Pro PHEV will be backed by the Nissan MORE 10-Year, 300,000km extended warranty (whichever occurs first) when serviced with Nissan. If the vehicle is not serviced through Nissan, or stops being serviced there, the extra years may not apply and the 5-year, unlimited-km warranty remains. Conditions apply.
What Nissan Hasn’t Confirmed Yet: Battery, EV Range, Price and Final Specs
Nissan will provide the battery details, estimated EV-only range, pricing and final specifications closer to arrival in Australian and New Zealand retailers next year. Power, torque, payload and towing figures remain subject to homologation, and Australian-market equipment is not final.
Should Australian Ute Buyers Wait for the 2027 Navara Pro PHEV?
On paper, the Navara Pro PHEV is a serious electrified ute: 300kW, 800Nm, mechanical 4×4, 3,500kg towing and V2L, tuned for local conditions. Battery size, EV range and price will decide how compelling it is, so watch for those details ahead of its 2027 arrival.
